About Us

Rhino Martial Arts (RMA) is the PREMIER Christian Martial Arts Club in  Central Iowa. We have more than 50 years of combined martial arts experience across our instructors, contributing leaders and founder. RMA is PROUDLY Veteran Owned, and has been in business since October 2006. In 2006 we first founded as Gus' Christian Black Belt Academy (CBBA), under the mentorship of CBBA 7th Degree Black Belt Grandmaster President Troy Stein, and 7th Degree Black Belt Co Founder Craig Shaw. In 2020 we rebranded as Rhino Martial Arts in order to add Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) based programs to our line-up, while still offering CBBA programs.

Our spiritual focus is to raise warriors in Christ, especially the youth- and we do this through a fun and accepting environment, where we meet the students at their skill level, and build from there. You do not have to be Christian to learn martial arts- all are welcome, the wisdom of the christian warrior ethos applies to all. At RMA, we do not compare students against each other, rather we focus on each individual and build their confidence, so they can be proud of their own accomplishments. Each program requires memorizing scripture and learning about the warrior ethos through a christian lens. 

Our martial arts focus is Self Defense- we believe that competing in tournaments is good for building confidence, and arguably goes a long way towards strong martial skills, yet- we have a larger focus- on helping kids, young men and women, and parents protect themselves, their friends and families as a first priority. What good does it do to gain the world, and not be able to defend yourself and others?

Our Martial Arts Programs are truly unique and PRICED to be family friendly! It is TRUE! After the first 2 students in a family, the tuition is *FREE for all other participants! This makes learning martial arts together not only affordable, but a key source of unforgettable family memories and experience. We have several discounts, including Veteran and First Responder discounts- we love our service men and women! 

Our Core offerings are in Traditional TKD, and a hybrid combination of Modern TaeKwonDo, MCMAP, BJJ and others in our very own Rhino Defense Systems offering.
